For the first time in 21 years, the United States has won the International Math Olympiad.

Six top high school students comprised the US Team, which competed with over 100 other teams from all around the world. The competition was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and lasted 2 days. Each student solves three problems.

Concern has been raised over the absence of females in top math competitions. All six members on the US team this year were male.

Team USA’s head coach, professor Po-Shen Loh, said, “Ultimately, I think that as the mathematical culture starts to reach out to more people in the United States, we could quite possibly start to see more diversity. And I think that would be a fantastic outcome.”
