Q&A With ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ Star Thomas Barbusca

Wet Hot American Summer was Netflix’s must watch new show of the summer. Serving as a prequel to the 2001 movie, the brand new Netflix series features many returning cast members and focuses on strictly the first day at Camp Firewood. Thomas Barbusca, the actor who plays Drew, was kind enough to answer a few questions for us here at Hip Daily!

What is it like working on Wet Hot American Summer?

It was a lot of fun. It felt like I was at a camp with all my friends and some pretty amazing actors

Did you originally audition for Drew?

Yes, I auditioned for Drew and I found out the next day that I got the role.

Would you say this is your biggest role to date?

Well I’d say Drew and Wet Hot were pretty big, but other than that I’d have to say Grey’s.  I had done 5 episodes of Grey’s Anatomy playing a patient with a rare heart condition. It was really cool working with Sandra Oh, she’s so funny.

Is there a sense of camaraderie between your fellow “campers” and you?

Oh yeah, we’re all still really good friends. I still play Xbox with some of the boys and then some of the older actors and the director tweet back and forth with me on Twitter. I’ve seen a few of them also on the studio lots and have worked with a some of them on other projects since Wet Hot.

How did you prepare for playing Drew?

I just tried to make him as mean and annoying as possible; so not me. It was fun though, playing someone you’re not.

Did you ever go to sleep away camp in real life?

No I never have. I was supposed to go camp we left New Jersey, but then we ended up coming to California for my sisters TV show, and now I’ve sort of just always worked in the summers.

Would you–actually–want to go to Camp Firewood?

Yes! After we wrapped me and all the kids talked about going to a summer camp, but only if it was just like Camp Firewood.

A big thanks to Thomas for answering a few of our questions! Be sure to watch season one of ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ on Netflix.  Photo Credit: Ben Miller
