BY KEVIN SAWYER – An activist group within the war ravaged country of Syria have decided to use a new strategy with regard to getting the world to pay attention to the desperate cries for help of Syria’s children who continue to be victim’s in the country’s vicious civil war. The group, The Revolutionary Forces of Syria (RFS), have been sending out pictures of desperate Syrian children on Twitter and other social media platforms in an effort to try and get the world to take notice and send some help.
Syria, for the last five years, has been embroiled in a civil war that has been especially notable for its brutality. Nearly 300,000 people have already been killed and most of the nation’s children are orphans who struggle to find food and safety on a daily basis. The two sides in the war have been at it for five years without any seeming resolution. The United States of America, England, Turkey, and Russia, as well as the Islamic State, have all been dragged into this conflict. Many analysts believe that this conflict just may be the start of a third world war.
The RFS group are posing the children with their messages, along with Psyducks and Pikachus, and it seems to have been an effective tactic so far. The RFS is fighting the standing government of the current Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad and look to replace his brutal dictatorship with one that is more prone toward the establishment of a Western style republican form of government. The USA and its allies have been supporting the group while the Russians have been propping up Assad.
The Social Media Director for the RFS, Mahmod Bakr, said that, “We want to raise awareness and draw attention to the plight of Syrian children in besieged areas and the suffering of the Syrian people who are attacked and killed by the Assad regime and its allies. Syrian children are the victims of the war and the brutal and indiscriminate attacks that are carried out on a daily basis by the Russian jets. The Syrian children are paying the price for international inaction to stop the Assad killing machine.”
The children, the RFS says, don’t even know what Pokemon is but know that most of the rest of the world will recognize the characters and, perhaps, respond to their desperation. Most of the messages on the cards simply say who the child is and a firm “please help me!”.
