Electric power plants in the US spewed 128 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in April 2015, the lowest for any month since April 1988, according a government report.

The US Energy Information Administration said renewable energy generation increased by 2% in the first quarter, over the same period in 2014.

Comparing the 27-year period between April 1988 and April 2015, natural gas consumption more than tripled and renewable energy consumption more than doubled, while coal consumption decreased 17%.
